Frequently Asked Questions about Fire Protection-Certified Materials
Fire protection classes rank materials and building products based on their behavior and resistance during fire exposure. These classifications establish the suitability of materials for specific uses in terms of fire safety. In Europe, fire protection classes are mainly governed by the EU standard EN 13501-1, and in Germany, by the DIN 4102.
Typically, manufacturers aiming for a B1 or B2 certification must subject their products to an extensive testing procedure. This involves checking the material properties in terms of their fire behavior, flammability, and ability to prevent the spread of fire.
The speific requirements and testing procedures as wel as the applicable standards may differ between countries. Generally, however, manufacturers must provide evidence that their products meet the defined standards and fulfill the criteria for classification as either non-combustible or normally combustible.
After the successful completion of the tests and submission of the required documents, certification is issued for the respective materials or construction products. This certification confirms that the materials are considered non-combustible or normally combustible and comply with the prevailing fire protection standards.
B1 refers to materials classified as 'non-combustible.' These materials are more difficult to ignite than those of class B2. They have a higher level of fire resistance and slow down the spread of fire. These materials are designed to withstand flames for a certain period of time and delay the spread of fire and smoke. This reduces the risk of rapid fire propagation and provides additional time for evacuation.
B1 materials are often used in areas where higher safety requirements are set, such as in public buildings, schools, offices, and other places with heavy pedestrian traffic. These materials are suitable for indoor use where increased fire protection requirements are imposed, and can help to enhance the safety standards of a building.
B2 refers to materials classified as 'normally flammable'. Materials of fire protection class B2 are capable of resisting fire, but not to a high degree. They do burn but the spread of flames is limited and controlled. These materials are not immediately flammable, but can catch fire with exposure.
B2 materials are commonly used in areas where normal flammability is tolerated, such as in the interiors of buildings. They are suitable for applications where fire protection is not the highest priority, but a certain level of safety is still required.
